Patrick Mouratoglou has admitted to \u2018having a few fights\u2019 with Serena Williams over her weight during their collaboration as coach and player.<\/p>\n
The American, who retired in 2022, has recently made headlines for admitting to using GLP-1 \u2013 a group of weight loss medications \u2013 to help her lose 14 kilograms in eight months.<\/p>\n
Williams<\/a> did so in order to \u2018try something different\u2019, having stated that she saw her weight as another \u2018opponent\u2019, combining the medication with \u2018training five hours a day\u2019 and \u2018running, walking, biking, stair climbing.\u2019<\/p>\n Mouratoglou joined forces with the 23-time Grand Slam champion as head coach in 2012 and continued that role for the remainder of the American\u2019s career.<\/p>\n \u201cOh, I remember it very well,\u201d remarked the Frenchman to The Guardian<\/a>, after being reminded of a story in which he was said to have argued her weight was negatively affecting her game.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was after the pregnancy \u2013 not right after; I know these things take time. I told her: \u2018Listen, this is not a comment on how you look. It\u2019s not my problem.\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cBut tennis is a sport in which you can\u2019t afford to be overweight. First of all, the pressure on your joints and everything is so big that your chances become much higher.<\/p>\n \u201cThe second thing is it\u2019s a sport in which you change directions all the time and with a lot of speed. Even one kilo overweight is a lot.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen you go full speed in one direction with one kilo extra and then need to stop and come back, the time that you lose is really important. Just look at the best players in the world \u2013 Alcaraz, Sinner, Djokovic. Think about their movement.<\/p>\n \u201cThe weight was affecting her movement.<\/p>\n \u201cIn Serena\u2019s case, she was older \u2013 so of course the body is not going to bounce back the same as before, and the risk of injury is even bigger.<\/p>\n \u201cWe had a few fights about it. I remember she did not like when I said that because she thought I was judging her. But I kept telling her, I don\u2019t care about your look. It\u2019s not my job.<\/p>\n \u201cMy job is your tennis.
