{"id":124,"date":"2025-03-08T12:00:25","date_gmt":"2025-03-08T12:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=124"},"modified":"2025-03-08T12:00:25","modified_gmt":"2025-03-08T12:00:25","slug":"innocent-jannik-sinner-defended-by-former-no-12-amid-doping-suspension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=124","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Innocent\u2019 Jannik Sinner defended by former No 12 amid doping suspension"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former world No 12 and Madrid Open tournament director Feliciano Lopez has questioned why \u201cinnocent\u201d Jannik Sinner is serving a three-month doping ban.<\/p>\n<p>World No 1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/jannik-sinner\">Sinner<\/a> is currently serving a three-month suspension after twice testing positive for banned steroid clostebol in March 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The three-time Grand Slam champion settled with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in February 2025, agreeing to a three-month ban, spanning from February 4th to May 4th 2025.<\/p>\n<p>That came after WADA appealed the International Tennis Integrity Agency\u2019s decision to hand Sinner no suspension after finding him to be of \u201cno fault\u201d in its ruling, which was announced in August 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Sinner successfully argued that he had accidently been contaminated by a team member and, while WADA did not contest this, they did challenge the severity of the 23-year-old\u2019s sanction.<\/p>\n<p>The case was set to be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in April 2025 before a settlement was reached between the two parties.<\/p>\n<p>Sinner\u2019s case has proven to be hugely divisive, but he has received significant support from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/feliciano-lopez\">Lopez<\/a>, who oversees the combined ATP and WTA 1000 event in Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>The World No 1 will miss the event due to his suspension, with the Italian not set to return until the week after action concludes in the Spanish capital.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marca.com\/tenis\/mutua-madrid-open\/2025\/03\/07\/feliciano-lopez-parte-exito-mutua-torneo-juega-madrid.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Marca<\/em><\/a>, the former world No 12 offered a strong defence of Sinner and admitted he did not \u201cunderstand\u201d why Sinner had ultimately been handed a suspension.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have said from the beginning that I believe he is innocent,\u201d said Lopez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has proven that he is not responsible for his positive test.
