{"id":1393,"date":"2025-12-01T14:00:32","date_gmt":"2025-12-01T14:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1393"},"modified":"2025-12-01T14:00:32","modified_gmt":"2025-12-01T14:00:32","slug":"is-serena-williams-about-to-announce-her-comeback-to-tennis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1393","title":{"rendered":"Is Serena Williams about to announce her comeback to tennis?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Serena Williams penned her emotional farewell letter in 2022, she simply stated that she was \u201cevolving away from tennis\u201d as she left the door ajar for a possible return and we might just have received the biggest hint yet that she could make a comeback.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the tennis great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/wta-tour\/breaking-news-serena-williams-confirms-retirement-us-open-ceremonial-final-on-court-moment\">refused to use the word \u201cretirement\u201d<\/a> in her Vogue op-ed piece as she wrote: \u201cI have never liked the word retirement. It doesn\u2019t feel like a modern word to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been thinking of this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe the best word to describe what I\u2019m up to is evolution. I\u2019m here to tell you that I\u2019m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me. A few years ago I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/serena-williams\">23-time Grand Slam winner<\/a> played her last match at the 2022 US Open, but barely a month later she dropped a hint that she could still make a comeback.<\/p>\n<p>During <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/serena-williams-not-retired-comeback-hints\">an event in San Francisco<\/a>, she was adamant as she stated: \u201cI am not retired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When told it sounded like she is \u201con the fence a little bit\u201d, she replied: \u201cThe chances [of me returning] are very high. You can come to my house and [see] I have a court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Williams and husband Alexis Ohanian have grown their family as they welcomed their second daughter, Adira River Ohanian, in August 2023, nearly six years after the birth of their first child, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.<\/p>\n<p>And now three years after she \u201cevolved away\u201d, her name has returned to the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA)\u2019s International Registered Testing Pool (IRTP).<\/p>\n<p>According to the ITIA, players on the IRTP need to inform the organisation about their whereabouts every day of the year through the World Anti-Doping Agency\u2019s (WADA) ADAMS platform.<\/p>\n<p>If you are on the list, it gives the ITIA permission to conduct no-notice, out-of-competition testing as part of its Tennis Anti-Doping Programme (TADP).<\/p>\n<p>The American remains on the ITIA\u2019s retired list, but according to the organisation\u2019s official website, players \u201cmay not return to sanctioned events unless they have made themselves available for out-of-competition testing for at least six months prior to the event in question\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>That could suggest Williams plans on returning in 2026 or even in 2027.<\/p>\n<h2>WTA Features<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-features\/2025-wta-tour-awards-aryna-sabalenka-madison-keys-victoria-mboko-alex-eala\"><strong>2025 WTA Tour Awards \u2013 ft. Aryna Sabalenka, Madison Keys, Victoria Mboko, Alex Eala<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/facts-stats\/how-emma-raducanu-2025-year-end-wta-ranking-compares-previous-years\">How Emma Raducanu\u2019s 2025 year-end WTA Ranking compares to previous years on tour<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With sister Venus still active, there had been some suggestions the Williams sisters could team up in the women\u2019s doubles at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>And there will be a host of tennis stars who would be happy to see her return as fellow great Novak Djokovic jokingly called on her to make a comeback earlier in 2025<\/p>\n<p>After Williams introduced Maria Sharapova during the Russian\u2019s induction at the Hall of Fame, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/novak-djokovic-dares-challenge-serena-williams-wonderful-maria-sharapova-moment\">the 24-time Grand Slam winner said<\/a>: \u201cSeeing Serena, you know, in any shape or form around tennis is great. You know, we miss her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she still hasn\u2019t officially retired, so I invite her. I challenge her because she\u2019s such a great competitor. So when somebody challenges her, she never refuses. So I challenge Serena.
