{"id":1410,"date":"2025-12-05T14:00:27","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T14:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1410"},"modified":"2025-12-05T14:00:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T14:00:27","slug":"anastasia-potapova-accused-of-copying-daria-kasatkinas-social-media-post-about-citizenship-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1410","title":{"rendered":"Anastasia Potapova accused of \u2018copying\u2019 Daria Kasatkina\u2019s social media post about citizenship change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Daria Kasatkina has reacted on social media after fellow WTA Tour player Anastasia Potapova was accused of \u2018copying\u2019 her former compatriot\u2019s message regarding her own citizenship change.<\/p>\n<p>World No 51 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/anastasia-potapova\">Potapova<\/a> announced on Thursday that she would begin to represent Austria from the start of the 2026 season, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-features\/tennis-stars-who-stopped-representing-russia-start-of-ukraine-war\">becoming the ninth Russian to change citizenship since the nation\u2019s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since March 2022, Russian and Belarusian players have been competing as neutral athletes on the ATP and WTA Tours, and were initially banned from Wimbledon in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Potapova\u2019s decision to change citizenship has come as somewhat of a surprise and has been met with a rather cool reception within Russian tennis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/former-world-no-1-good-riddance-anastasia-potapovas-nationality-switch\">with former world No 1 Yevgeny Kafelnikov bidding \u201cgood riddance\u201d to the 24-year-old<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Her announcement comes just days after<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/tennis-star-griekspoor-snub-pleas-withdraw-russia-event-girlfriend-potapova\"> she competed at the controversial Northern Palmyra Trophies exhibition in St. Petersburg<\/a>, an event sponsored by Gazprom \u2014 a company accused of funding Russia\u2019s invasion.<\/p>\n<p>The winner of three WTA titles, Potapova\u2019s decision to change citizenship follows less than nine months since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/daria-kasatkina\">Kasatkina<\/a> made the same decision in March 2025.<\/p>\n<p>A former world No 8 and winner of eight WTA Tour titles, Kasatkina is by far and away the most high-profile player to change citizenship since February 2022, announcing an immediate switch to Australia earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-features\/the-openly-lgbtq-players-currently-competing-on-the-wta-tour\">The 28-year-old is openly gay<\/a> and has openly spoken out against Russia\u2019s strict anti-LBGTQ+ laws, while she has also condemned the invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<h2>Tennis News<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/emma-raducanu-rankings-goal-biggest-mistake\">Exclusive: Former British No 1 on Emma Raducanu\u2019s biggest mistake as he sets bold rankings goal<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/serena-williams-former-coach-reveals-big-asset-key-comeback\">Serena Williams\u2019 former coach reveals \u2018big asset\u2019 that could be key to comeback<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, the world No 37 has reacted online after one fan pointed out clear similarities between the statement Potapova issued on Thursday, and her own statement from March.<\/p>\n<p>Both statements start with the exact same phrase: \u201cI am delighted to let you all know that\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are further apparent similarities between the two statements, most notably a similar section in both statements that reads: \u201c\u2026a place I love, is incredibly welcoming and a place where I feel totally at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to a post highlighting the similarities on X, formerly Twitter, Kasatkina merely quote-tweeted the post \u2014 with an image of the two statements together \u2014 with a skull emoji.<\/p>\n<p>The 28-year-old further clarified that she and Potapova were not from the \u201csame agency\u201d, dismissing suggestions that the same PR team could have drafted similar messages.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p>And no, we are not from same agency<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Daria Kasatkina (@DKasatkina) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DKasatkina\/status\/1996925909975421113?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 5, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Below, both Potapova\u2019s and Kasatkina\u2019s statements are presented unedited and in full.<\/p>\n<h2>Anastasia Potapova\u2019s full statement (December 2025)<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI am delighted to let you all know that my application for citizenship has been accepted by the Austrian Government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustria is a place I love, is incredibly welcoming and a place where I feel totally at home. As part of this I am proud to announce that starting from 2026 I will be representing my new homeland Austria in my professional tennis career from this point onwards.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Daria Kasatkina\u2019s full statement (March 2025)<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI am delighted to let you all know that my application for permanent residency has been accepted by the Australian Government. Australia is a place I love, is incredibly welcoming and a place where I feel totally at home. I love being in Melbourne and look forward to making my home there. As part of this, I am proud to announce that I will be representing my new homeland, Australia, in my professional tennis career from this point onwards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, there are parts of this decision that have not been easy.
