{"id":1604,"date":"2026-01-13T07:15:59","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T07:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1604"},"modified":"2026-01-13T07:15:59","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T07:15:59","slug":"roger-federer-and-not-andy-murray-would-be-perfect-coach-for-carlos-alcaraz-says-former-world-no-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1604","title":{"rendered":"Roger Federer \u2013 and not Andy Murray \u2013 would be \u2018perfect coach for Carlos Alcaraz\u2019, says former world No 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Carlos Alcaraz has been told \u201cit\u2019s very important\u201d to consider a Grand Slam winner as his next coach and tennis great Mats Wilander has named Roger Federer as the \u201cperfect\u201d candidate as he can help the Spaniard with the \u201cgame he doesn\u2019t feel as comfortable with\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Reigning world No 1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/carlos-alcarazs-full-statetement-as-he-announces-shock-split-from-juan-carlos-ferrero\">Alcaraz shocked the tennis world<\/a> in December when he announced that he had parted ways with Juan Carlos Ferrero after seven successful years during which they won six Grand Slams with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\">Alcaraz<\/a> peaking at No 1 in the ATP Rankings.<\/p>\n<p>The news took the tennis world by storm as it appeared to be a happy relationship, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/how-strained-relationship-between-ferrero-alcaraz-camp-led-to-break-up\">reports soon emerged<\/a> that all was not well behind the scenes with Alcaraz\u2019s entourage reportedly unhappy with Ferrero for quite some time.<\/p>\n<p>One journalist claimed that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/carlos-alcaraz-entourage-wanted-andy-murray-to-replace-juan-carlos-ferrero-in-2024-report\">Alcaraz camp wanted to replace the 2003 French Open winner<\/a> as coach back in December 2024, but the player himself scuppered the plans and the Spaniard continued in 2025 only to be replaced at the end of the season.<\/p>\n<p>The same report revealed that Andy Murray was lined up to replace Ferrero in 2024, but Novak Djokovic thwarted those plans as he appointed the three-time Grand Slam winner as his coach, although the two parted ways after a few months in 2025.<\/p>\n<h2>Carlos Alcaraz News<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/carlos-alcaraz-jannik-sinner-novak-djokovic-australian-open-favourite-rod-laver\">Why Carlos Alcaraz could have a crucial \u2018edge\u2019 over Jannik Sinner at Australian Open \u2013 tennis icon<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/carlos-alcaraz-jannik-sinner-match-farce-australian-open\">Why Carlos Alcaraz\u2019s latest match against Jannik Sinner was turned into a non-event<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alcaraz, though, has named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-features\/who-is-samuel-lopez-man-set-to-lead-carlos-alcaraz-new-era-post-ferrero\">Samuel Lopez<\/a> \u2013 who joined the team on a full-time basis ahead of the 2025 season \u2013 as his main coach, but many believe he will appoint a second mentor in due course.<\/p>\n<p>Seven-time Grand Slam winner Wilander believes Alcaraz is likely to turn to another Spaniard, but<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurosport.es\/tenis\/open-australia\/2026\/mats-wilander-entrevista-roger-federer-entrenador-carlos-alcaraz-perfecto-sustituto-juan-carlos-ferrero_sto23258389\/story.shtml\">Eurosport<\/a>, seven-time Grand Slam winner Wilander stated Alcaraz is likely to turn to another Spaniard, but he also explained why 20-time major champion Federer \u2013 and not Murray \u2013 would work well with Alcaraz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s very important to have a Grand Slam winner in your ear, he already had Juan Carlos Ferrero,\u201d the Swede stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think if you are going to have another Grand Slam winner in your ear, that voice should come from a player who plays a different kind of game. When you take Murray and you take Carlos Alcaraz, there is a similarity in the way they are playing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if you take a John McEnroe and a Carlos Alcaraz, suddenly see a big change. Or if you take a Stefan Edberg and a Carlos Alcaraz, there\u2019s a big difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr let\u2019s consider Roger Federer in there, for example. Now you are talking about someone who could really help Carlos Alcaraz with the game he doesn\u2019t feel as comfortable with.
