{"id":1676,"date":"2026-01-28T14:15:40","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T14:15:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1676"},"modified":"2026-01-28T14:15:40","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T14:15:40","slug":"devastating-jannik-sinner-is-on-a-different-level-according-to-former-grand-slam-champion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1676","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Devastating\u2019 Jannik Sinner is on a \u2018different level\u2019 according to former Grand Slam champion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jannik Sinner is on a \u2018different level\u2019 from other players who \u2018just can\u2019t hang with him\u2019, according to Jamie Murray.<\/p>\n<p>The Italian collected his 19<sup>th<\/sup> match win in a row at the Australian Open after beating Ben Shelton 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/jannik-sinner\">Sinner<\/a> is also on an overall 20-match winning streak, having ended the 2025 season by winning titles at the Vienna Open, Paris Masters, and the Nitto ATP Finals.<\/p>\n<p>The world No 2\u2019s future in Melbourne looked dim in the third round after suffering from full-body cramps against American Eliot Spizzirri, a problem which has been absent in his two subsequent matches.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie Murray, seven-time Grand Slam champion and former British No 1, was effusive in his praise of Sinner after his victory over Shelton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s on a different level,\u201d said Murray, whilst speaking on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tntsports.co.uk\/tennis\/australian-open\/2026\/jannik-sinner-ben-shelton-level-reaction-jamie-murray-tim-henman_sto23264064\/story.shtml\">TNT Sports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuys just can\u2019t hang with him. Even with Shelton\u2019s firepower it is so difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is so good at neutralising the play and getting himself back into position in the court, and once he has a position to get his front foot forward it\u2019s so hard for guys to get back into the rally, there is no let-up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe challenge against Sinner is his tempo is so high in the rally and he is so quick from side to side, and it is so difficult to deal with him once you are in a rally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sinner has now won 22 sets in a row against Shelton, including all of their eight most recent meetings.<\/p>\n<p>The American had prevailed in their first meeting at the 2023 edition of the Shanghai Masters, claiming a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) victory.<\/p>\n<p>However, on this occasion, Sinner\u2019s more all-around game meant that he was rarely troubled, breaking on three occasions and saving all four break points which he faced.<\/p>\n<h2>Australian Open News<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/lorenzo-musetti-speaks-injury-retirement-novak-djokovic-australian-open\">Australian Open: Lorenzo Musetti makes telling confession about injury after \u2018painful\u2019 retirement<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/novak-djokovic-australian-open-lorenzo-musetti-lucky-experts-react\">Novak Djokovic gets warning about his level from experts after \u2018lucky\u2019 Australian Open escape<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tim Henman, former British No 1 and TNT Sports contributor, also weighed in with his analysis of why the four-time Grand Slam champion is a step above the field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough Shelton tried a few different things, mixing up his serve and trying to finish up a few points at the net, time and time again Sinner comes up with the answers,\u201d commented the Brit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why he is so difficult for everybody to beat on a hard court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSinner is serving incredibly well and then on the return of serve, Shelton has one of the best serves out there, but Sinner is in most service games and putting the pressure on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen on both wings he is devastating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has to play some of the best tennis of his life to win the baseline exchanges, and unfortunately for him when he had some second serve returns, he didn\u2019t make his opponent play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut his game is moving in the right direction. He has reached another Grand Slam quarter-final, and he will go away and look at where he can improve to have an impact against Sinner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that Sinner is so tough, but when you have a serve like Shelton and you haven\u2019t won a set in the last 22, he will want to put that straight next time they meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sinner will play 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic in the last four, with Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev contesting the opposing semi-final.<\/p>\n<p>The Italian has won all of his last five most recent meetings against the 24-time Grand Slam champion, including straight-set victories at last year\u2019s French Open and Wimbledon.<\/p>\n<p>It was Sinner who, in 2024, became the first player in history to beat the Serb after the quarter-final stage of the Australian Open.<\/p>\n<p>That semi-final contest ended 6-1, 6-2, 7-6(6), 6-3 in the world No 2\u2019s favour, snapping Djokovic\u2019s 34-match winning streak in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Want more from Tennis365?
