{"id":1688,"date":"2026-01-30T12:00:59","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T12:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1688"},"modified":"2026-01-30T12:00:59","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T12:00:59","slug":"alexander-zverev-asked-about-carlos-alcarazs-cramping-medical-time-out-after-australian-open-epic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1688","title":{"rendered":"Alexander Zverev asked about Carlos Alcaraz\u2019s \u2018cramping\u2019 medical time out after Australian Open epic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alexander Zverev has conceded that he \u201cdidn\u2019t like\u201d Carlos Alcaraz receiving a medical time out for cramping during their epic Australian Open semi-final on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/carlos-alcaraz-explains-physical-struggles-battles-from-brink-australian-open-thriller\">World No 1 Alcaraz battled from the brink of defeat to reach his first Australian Open final<\/a>, rallying from 5-3 down in the deciding set to claim a dramatic 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-7(4), 7-5 against third seed and world No 3<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/alexander-zverev\"> Zverev<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Spaniard had appeared in full control of the semi-final until midway through the third set, when it became obvious that the 22-year-old was cramping and struggling physically.<\/p>\n<p>Players who are cramping are allowed to receive treatment at three separate change of ends, though they are not usually allowed to receive a medical time out.<\/p>\n<p>However, as stated in the official rules: \u201cIn cases where there is doubt about whether the player suffers from an acute medical condition, non-acute medical condition inclusive of muscle cramping, or non-treatable medical condition, the decision of the Doctor\/Sports Physiotherapist, if appropriate, is final.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the Doctor\/Sports Physiotherapist trainer believes that the player has heat illness, and if muscle cramping is one of the manifestations of heat illness, then the muscle cramping may be treated as part of the recommended treatment by the Doctor\/Sports Physiotherapist for the heat illness condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of how justifiable or not Alcaraz\u2019s treatment was, 2025 Australian Open finalist Zverev was left evidently frustrated during the medical time out, and was seen complaining with his team and with the match supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>The German was able to take advantage of his opponent\u2019s physical struggles to force a decider, but was ultimately unable to seal victory in the deciding set.<\/p>\n<h2>Tennis News<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/elena-rybakina-claims-stefano-vukov-definitely-makes-difference-australian-open-final\">Elena Rybakina claims Stefano Vukov \u2018definitely makes a difference\u2019 after reaching Australian Open final<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/lorenzo-musetti-gave-up-novak-djokovic-retirement\">Lorenzo Musetti told \u2018better be out for eight weeks\u2019 after Novak Djokovic retirement<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Asked in his press conference about the incident, Zverev admitted his frustration \u2014 but conceded the matter was out of his control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, I mean, he was cramping. Normally, you can\u2019t take a medical time out for cramping,\u201d said the world No 3.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, what can I do? It\u2019s not my decision. I didn\u2019t like it, but it\u2019s not my decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Further pressed about the conversation he had in German with the match supervisor, Zverev ultimately insisted that he wanted to move on from the controversy.<\/p>\n<p>He replied: \u201cI just said it was bulls**t, basically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest, it was 17 hours ago, I don\u2019t quite remember \u2014 but I\u2019m sure somebody has it on video, and you can check.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest, I don\u2019t want to talk about this right now, because I think this was one of the best battles there ever was in Australia. It doesn\u2019t deserve to be the topic now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Defeat for Zverev is another tight loss for the German at the latter stage of a Grand Slam, with the 28-year-old still searching for an elusive first major title.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Alcaraz is in his first Australian Open final and eighth Grand Slam final overall, and will look to complete the Career Grand Slam in Sunday\u2019s men\u2019s singles final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Want more from Tennis365?
