{"id":1698,"date":"2026-02-01T15:17:45","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T15:17:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1698"},"modified":"2026-02-01T15:17:45","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T15:17:45","slug":"carlos-alcarazs-australian-open-win-proved-ferrero-split-was-right-decision-former-world-no-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1698","title":{"rendered":"Carlos Alcaraz\u2019s Australian Open win proved Ferrero split was \u2018right decision\u2019 \u2013 former world No 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tennis legend Boris Becker thinks Carlos Alcaraz\u2019s triumph at the 2026 Australian Open has proven that the world No 1 made the right decision to part ways with his former coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\">Alcaraz<\/a> defeated 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 in the final on Rod Laver Arena to secure his maiden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/australian-open\">Australian Open<\/a> crown and seventh Grand Slam overall.<\/p>\n<p>At the age of 22, Alcaraz\u2019s victory saw him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/facts-stats\/youngest-men-complete-career-grand-slam-open-era-carlos-alcaraz-beat-federer-djokovic-nadal\">become the youngest male player to complete a career Grand Slam in the Open Era, breaking Rafael Nadal\u2019s record<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During the off-season, Alcaraz made the surprise announcement that he had parted ways with Ferrero, who he had been coached by since 2018, when he was 16 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Lopez, who coaches at Ferrero\u2019s academy, took the reins as Alcaraz\u2019s main coach, having joined the team in December 2024. Prior to this, Lopez had already coached Alcaraz at tournaments Ferrero did not attend in 2022 and 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Open was Alcaraz\u2019s first tournament since the split with Ferrero, and it is the first title he has won without the former world No 1 in his team.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Eurosport Germany, Becker lauded Alcaraz after his triumph in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuge respect, a really strong performance from Alcaraz,\u201d said the six-time Grand Slam champion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t look like it at the start, because Djokovic played a sensational first set. The longer the match went on, the more you got the feeling that Alcaraz was feeling comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe long rallies at the end, when he stood up to his opponent, made it clear to me that Novak\u2019s time was slowly running out on this day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a difficult decision for Team Alcaraz to part ways with the successful duo of Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrero. But after 14 days, we know that the decision was the right one. The semi-final against Alexander Zverev was hard-fought, but today he was simply outstanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former world No 4\u00a0Tim Henman gave his reaction to Alcaraz\u2019s win on\u00a0TNT Sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely phenomenal when you take into consideration the greats of the games who took so long to achieve it,\u201d Henman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you reflect he won his first Slam in New York in 2022 and he\u2019s just gone from strength to strength, proving he can play on every surface.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s the way he\u2019s gone about it, his personality and charisma on and off the court. It\u2019s how we were wanting the next generation to come through after [Roger] Federer, [Rafael] Nadal and Djokovic\u2026 let\u2019s not forget Jannik Sinner, but the way Alcaraz has come through to win his seventh Grand Slam and first Australian Open is truly remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a performer, he\u2019s out on stage and wants to show off his skillset, and he\u2019s got so many skills.
