{"id":1752,"date":"2026-02-13T13:00:55","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T13:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1752"},"modified":"2026-02-13T13:00:55","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T13:00:55","slug":"wta-stars-call-for-more-privacy-after-invasive-coco-gauff-camera-incident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1752","title":{"rendered":"WTA stars call for more privacy after \u2018invasive\u2019 Coco Gauff camera incident"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Coco Gauff\u2019s off-court racket-smashing moment after her Australian Open exit has raised questions about the lack of privacy afforded to tennis players at tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>After suffering a humbling 6-1, 6-2 quarter-final defeat in just 59 minutes at the hands of Elina Svitolina at Melbourne Park, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/coco-gauff\">Gauff<\/a> sought out a private space outside the main Rod Laver Arena <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/coco-gauff-speaks-racket-smash-serving-australian-open\">to take out her frustration on her racket<\/a> \u2013 or so she thought.<\/p>\n<p>The incident was captured on camera, and it quickly went viral on social media with some criticising the two-time Grand Slam winner, but her fellow players quickly came to her defence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to go somewhere where they wouldn\u2019t broadcast it, but obviously they did,\u201d Gauff said. \u201cSo maybe some conversations can be had because I feel like at this tournament the only private place we have is the locker room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/novak-djokovic-iga-swiatek-coco-gauff-criticism-australian-open-privacy-serena-williams\">Six-time major winner Iga Swiatek<\/a> was one of those who raised questions about privacy as she said: \u201cThe question is, are we tennis players, or are we animals in the zoo where they are observed even when they poop? That was exaggerating, obviously, but it would be nice to have some privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>WTA News<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/serena-williams-expects-to-win-another-grand-slam-comeback-former-coach-rick-macci\">Serena Williams \u2018expects she can win another Grand Slam\u2019, according to her ex-coach<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/elena-rybakina-asked-if-women-should-play-best-of-five-sets\">Elena Rybakina asked if women should play best-of-five sets as Australian Open considers change<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is certainly a topic that needs further discussion, as it would make sense for the cameras to be switched off once players leave the court.<\/p>\n<p>2021 Olympic singles gold medallist Belinda Bencic says it often feels like players are part of a reality show as she told The National: \u201cIt\u2019s not comfortable at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have that in your mind always, but you cannot be free, even in a positive way, but also in a negative way. You always feel watched and it feels almost like you\u2019re in a reality show, to be honest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not a big fan of it. I know it\u2019s super interesting for the fans and for people watching that. And I guess Tennis Twitter can gossip about us, but it\u2019s not really what we\u2019re here for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former world No 4 added: \u201cAnd Coco deserves her moment of privacy. She just played in a stadium where she had to keep her emotions together. And then she goes outside of the stadium and she has to still keep her emotions together. It\u2019s not possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bencic has seen it all as she has been on the WTA Tour for more than a decade, but rising star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/alex-eala\">Alex Eala<\/a> is still coming to grips with life as a professional tennis player.<\/p>\n<p>The 20-year-old made her top-level breakthrough last year and with it comes a struggle for privacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am learning to deal with a lot of, you know, these cameras and a lot of the times when people see me, the phone is the first thing they reach out for. Which is something that I have to adjust to,\u201d the Filipina said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do value privacy a lot. I think everyone has the right to their own privacy and sometimes being a public figure, the lines are a little bit blurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr sometimes I can understand that we don\u2019t have the power to draw our own line.
