{"id":1796,"date":"2026-02-26T12:00:46","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T12:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1796"},"modified":"2026-02-26T12:00:46","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T12:00:46","slug":"emma-raducanu-reunites-with-coach-who-said-she-had-one-choice-ahead-of-indian-wells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1796","title":{"rendered":"Emma Raducanu reunites with coach who said she had \u2018one choice\u2019 ahead of Indian Wells"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Emma Raducanu has turned to a familiar face after her latest coaching split, with the British star reuniting with former coach Mark Petchey ahead of the 2026 Indian Wells Open.<\/p>\n<p>The 2021 US Open champion parted ways with Francisco Roig after her second round exit at the Australian Open last month, having worked with the Spanish coach since August.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to hiring Roig, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/emma-raducanu\">Raducanu<\/a> enjoyed a successful collaboration with Petchey between March and August last year, while she was also coached by the former British No 1 in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Times, Raducanu has brought Petchey back into her team \u201con an informal basis\u201d before the WTA 1000 event in Indian Wells, which will begin on 4 March.<\/p>\n<p>Petchey, who works as an analyst and commentator for Tennis Channel, will reportedly help Raducanu during practice sessions in Indian Wells.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/emma-raducanu-not-actively-looking-for-a-coach-health-update-issued\">Raducanu said she was not \u201cactively looking for a new coach\u201d<\/a> earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear whether Petchey, who previously worked with Andy Murray, will continue coaching the world No 25 after the tournament in the Californian desert.<\/p>\n<h2>WTA Tour News<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/emma-raducanus-full-circle-moment-mother-renee-zha-new-uniqlo-role\"><strong>Emma Raducanu reveals full-circle moment involving her mother as she takes on new Uniqlo role<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/emma-raducanu-us-open-problem-greg-rusedski-message-critics\"><strong>Emma Raducanu critics told to \u2018give her some credit\u2019 after US Open win created a \u2018problem\u2019<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Want more from Tennis365? Add us as <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=tennis365.com\" target=\"_blank\">a preferred source on Google to your favourites list<\/a> for tennis coverage you can trust.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alexis Canter has served as Raducanu\u2019s coach and hitting partner since her split with Roig, and he is expected to remain \u201ca key part\u201d of her coaching setup.<\/p>\n<p>Following her loss to Anastasia Potapova at the Australian Open, Raducanu alluded to a disconnect between herself and Roig as she spoke of a \u201cmisalignment\u201d\u00a0with how she was playing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I want to be playing a different way. And I think the misalignment with how I\u2019m playing right now and how I want to be playing is something that I just want to work on,\u201d Raducanu said.<\/p>\n<p>The 23-year-old added: \u201cAt the end of the day, I just want to hit the ball to the corners and hard. I feel like I\u2019m doing all this variety, and it\u2019s not doing what I want it to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to just work on playing, in a way, more similar to how I was playing when I was younger. I always just changed direction, took the ball early, and went for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During an appearance on Tennis Channel\u2019s The Big T podcast this month, Petchey was clear on how he thinks Raducanu should be trying to play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think from my perspective watching her play, she really only has one choice \u2014 she needs to stay up on the baseline, she needs to be able to redirect, and she needs to serve well,\u201d Petchey said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if she can put those components on the court, she\u2019s going to give herself a chance to win big matches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on an episode of the same podcast in January, Petchey said he would \u201ctake a bullet\u201d for Raducanu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmma and I never fell out. It just got to the point where I felt I couldn\u2019t be the No 1 coach [due to his media commitments],\u201d the former world No 80 explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe still chat, we\u2019re still in good communication, she\u2019ll still run some stuff past me. I\u2019ll help her for ever.
