{"id":1980,"date":"2026-04-04T15:53:47","date_gmt":"2026-04-04T15:53:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1980"},"modified":"2026-04-04T15:53:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T15:53:47","slug":"iga-swiateks-ex-coach-wim-fissette-delivers-candid-verdict-in-first-interview-since-split","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=1980","title":{"rendered":"Iga Swiatek\u2019s ex-coach Wim Fissette delivers candid verdict in first interview since split"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Iga Swiatek\u2019s ex-coach, Wim Fissette, has spoken out for the first time since their sudden split, stating that the move is \u2018part of the job\u2019 and that he is \u2018really happy\u2019 to have been part of the Pole\u2019s team.<\/p>\n<p>The six-time Grand Slam champion announced the split just days after her shock opening-match loss at the Miami Open.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/iga-swiatek\">Swiatek<\/a> has teamed up with Spaniard Francisco Roig, who coached 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal for nearly two decades.<\/p>\n<p>In recent days, the trio have been seen in action at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca.<\/p>\n<p>The Pole and Fissette first came together in October 2024, after Swiatek parted ways with Tomasz Wiktorowski, continuing for 17 months.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to his most recent coaching role, Fissette also worked with the likes of Kim Clijsters, Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, Victoria Azarenka, Simona Halep, and Johanna Konta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are some teams that can stay really calm under, let\u2019s say, difficult conditions,\u201d analysed Fissette during his interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7167246\/2026\/04\/04\/tennis-wim-fissette-iga-swiatek-coach-interview\/?unlocked_article_code=1.YVA.Y902.BqqisQrtrZ3n&amp;smid=ta-ios-share\">The Athletic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOthers feel like something needs to change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs in every sport, it\u2019s always first the coach that has to go. At the highest level in sports, this is part of the job. You have to accept that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were almost unbeatable for a few years. The expectations are going to be super high. Every loss will hurt extra. I was aware of the difficulties in this project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was impossible to do better. But I was still really happy that I took the challenge, and happy with what we achieved. Iga is such an extraordinary player and athlete.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Tennis News<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/atp-tour\/jannik-sinner-downplays-world-no-1-chances-he-aims-positive-clay-court-season\">Jannik Sinner downplays world No 1 chances as he aims for \u2018positive\u2019 clay-court season<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/patrick-mouratoglou-warns-tennis-fanbase-brands-sport-relic-pasthttps:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/patrick-mouratoglou-warns-tennis-fanbase-brands-sport-relic-past\">Patrick Mouratoglou warns tennis is \u2018in danger\u2019 as he brands sport a \u2018relic of the past\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Swiatek and Fissette\u2019s parting of ways was rumoured for months, after a disappointing 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst the pair won their first Grand Slam together at Wimbledon in 2025, this season produced quarter-final losses at the Australian Open (to Elena Rybakina), Qatar Open (Maria Sakkari), and Indian Wells (Elina Svitolina).<\/p>\n<p>At the Miami Open, compatriot and world No 50 Magda Linette battled from a set down to snap Swiatek\u2019s streak of 73 consecutive opening-match victories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at the best players in the world in the past 20 years, it\u2019s, \u2018How can I learn to improve and to develop? \u2018\u201d added Fissette.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially after losses, it was difficult to look at the development instead of like, OK, \u2018Let\u2019s just keep trying to do what was working.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has been working with the same people for a lot of years, and she\u2019s been super successful for years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s normal that in, let\u2019s say, challenging times, that she kind of goes back to these people or maybe wants more from these people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes it just takes a hard time. It takes something that happens to make you do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Swiatek\u2019s announcement of the split remarked upon both their successes and the more recent challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter many months of working together with my coach I\u2019ve decided to take a different path,\u201d the Pole stated on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an intense time full of challenges and many important experiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m grateful for his support, experience, and everything we achieved together \u2013 including one of my biggest dreams in sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWim, thank you for this time and for the lessons I\u2019ve learned thanks to you.
