Jannik Sinner<\/a>\u2019s decision to withdraw from the Cincinnati Open has caused plenty of worry with fans and pundits so soon to the US Open.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati,\u201d said Sinner in a statement shared by the Masters event.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy right knee has been bothering me, and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I\u2019m not ready to compete yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very disappointed not to be able to play in Cincinnati and wish Bob [Moran] and his whole team a great and successful event. I can\u2019t wait to be back next year, and I\u2019m now focusing on getting ready for the US Open.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sinner\u2019s withdrawal means he will not be playing a warm-up tournament ahead of the US Open, which has become a running theme for the Italian.<\/p>\n

The star reached the final of the Australian Open earlier this year without playing a tournament Down Under. At Wimbledon, he lifted the title without playing a competitive grass court match before the Grand Slam.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Marco Beltrani<\/a>, former ATP Tour<\/a> doctor Dr. Giovanni Di Giacomo has shared his thoughts on Sinner\u2019s<\/a> knee injury and his Cincinnati Open withdrawal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are incredibly human guys, who have ligaments, have tendons, have cartilage, have functional overload pains, have their own genetic characteristics. Despite being champions, each one can be penalized for a whole series of reasons,\u201d said Giacomo.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf his colleagues deemed it appropriate to slow down the overload on the knee, it means he has an overload syndrome, just like so many other athletes have had in the past. Rest always represents the best treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI assume they preferred not to risk Cincinnati in order to show up in the best possible condition for the US Open<\/a>. You always have to do the math and figure out where it\u2019s worth not taking risks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having worked on the ATP Tour during the nineties, Giacomo also compared the current schedule to the one players used to play under 30 years ago.<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, he believes the same problems still exist.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I started with the ATP, 33 years ago now, these overload issues were already there,\u201d he said. \u201cThey played every week, there were tons of tournaments. It\u2019s always the same old story repeating itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn fact, compared to thirty years ago, everything has changed for the better: training methods have improved, as has monitoring and prevention. And here genetics comes into play too.\u201d<\/p>\n

With both Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz<\/a> injured heading into the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year is in danger of losing two of its most popular players.<\/p>\n
