World No 1 Jannik Sinner<\/a> is one of seven ATP stars who have been forced to pull out of the US Open while the WTA withdrawal tally sits at nine.<\/p>\n

2024 US Open champion Sinner dropped a bombshell on Friday<\/a> as he confirmed he won\u2019t feature at the season-ending Grand Slam in Flushing Meadows due to a right knee injury sustained after Wimbledon.<\/p>\n

But there is good news for organisers as Carlos Alcaraz<\/a> has confirmed he will return to defend his title<\/a> as he will make his long-awaited comeback following his three-month layoff due to a wrist injury.<\/p>\n

Five-time Grand Slam winner Sinner\u2019s withdrawal means world No 2 Alexander Zverev will be the top seed in New York with Alcaraz seeded second, Felix Auger-Aliassime third and Novak Djokovic fifth.<\/p>\n

Sinner is one of two seeded players to withdraw from the men\u2019s entry list with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina \u2013 who was projected to be 26th \u2013 also out as he is struggling with a back injury.<\/p>\n

The Dane was forced to undergo surgery last October and he was seen practising with Alcaraz in Murcia this week, sparking hope that he was about to return after a 10-month absence.<\/p>\n

But that won\u2019t be the case as he wrote on social media: \u201cReally happy with my improvement and level. And we keep working.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy team and I have decided not to have a Grand Slam as my first tournament coming back. @usopen see you next year.\u201d<\/p>\n
