Roger Federer<\/a> mentioned both Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic as he gave a telling answer when discussing the favourites to win the 2026 US Open men\u2019s title.<\/p>\n

The men\u2019s singles event at this year\u2019s US Open promises to be one of the most difficult Grand Slam tournaments to predict in recent memory.<\/p>\n

World No 1 Jannik Sinner, who would likely have been a firm favourite, pulled out of the US Open<\/a> due to a knee injury,<\/p>\n

Second-ranked Alexander Zverev, who is the top seed in the absence of Sinner, won his maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open in June.<\/p>\n

Carlos Alcaraz<\/a>, the reigning champion, enters the tournament having not played a match in over four months due to a right wrist injury.<\/p>\n

At the age of 39, No 4 seed Novak Djokovic<\/a> is aiming to become the oldest player to win a major, having secured his most recent Slam at the 2023 US Open.<\/p>\n

In an interview with ESPN<\/a> ahead of the US Open, Federer was asked if he could pick the men\u2019s winner.<\/p>\n

\u201cTough one, it\u2019s a really tricky one\u2026 I mean, obviously, I would pick Alcaraz and Novak if Sinner\u2019s not here,\u201d said the legendary Swiss.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut then, Carlito, we don\u2019t know. And Novak, we just don\u2019t know, as well, right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 20-time Grand Slam champion also addressed the challenge Alcaraz faces in New York following his lengthy absence.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it depends, and only he knows, how much he\u2019s been practising,\u201d said Federer.<\/p>\n

\u201cHas he been able to go all out in practice? For how long? Has it been a week? Has it been a month? And I think that\u2019s the difference maker.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it\u2019s only been a week, I think it\u2019s going to be very tricky. And if it\u2019s a month, I give him a good chance to find his groove early on.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, he just needs to make sure he get\u2019s through the first, let\u2019s say, three rounds, to get rolling.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know, I don\u2019t know the insights of how his practice schedule has looked like.\u201d<\/p>\n
