Tennis legend Boris Becker has asserted that Arthur Fils belongs in the same category as Carlos Alcaraz<\/a> and Jannik Sinner ahead of the 2026 US Open.<\/p>\n

Fils<\/a> climbed to a career-high ranking of world No 11 on Monday after securing the biggest title of his career at the Cincinnati Masters last week.<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old Frenchman is the No 10 seed at the US Open<\/a>, and he is seen by some as a genuine contender for the title.<\/p>\n

Following his Cincinnati victory, Fils made a strong statement by writing \u201cWho\u2019s gonna talk now?\u201d on the camera lens.<\/a><\/p>\n

In his press conference, Fils explained why he wrote that message.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause people were talking very bad. You know, in France, it\u2019s very easy sometimes\u2026 to criticise,\u201d Fils said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very easy to criticise, and I didn\u2019t play the French Open. I lost early in Washington, and then people think that I\u2019m done, and I don\u2019t know how to play tennis.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut here we are, I got the title, and I think no one\u2019s going to talk now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking with former WTA star Andrea Petkovic on the Becker Petkovic<\/a> podcast, Becker lauded Fils\u2019 potential and expressed disbelief at the criticism he has faced in his home country.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyone who has some tennis sense sees him as a future superstar in the Sinner, Alcaraz category,\u201d said the six-time Grand Slam winner.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, he\u2019s so strong that he belongs in that category despite having had physical problems.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had a back problem last year and was out of action for half a year, and it\u2019s obvious that he\u2019s finding his form again.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will still be setbacks \u2014 it makes sense. But he played the clay-court season before, got injured there, didn\u2019t pay in Paris.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe played excellently in Washington and Canada, and now he\u2019s won the title [in Cincinnati]. He\u2019s currently fifth in the Race to Turin, despite having played very few tournaments.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho is the next Frenchman to even come close? What do I know? I don\u2019t understand the French. I mean, if I have such a talented guy with charisma, he plays great shots, he looks good and so on, then I carry him on my hands and find every reason to support him.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut if the French don\u2019t want him, I think I speak on behalf of German tennis when I say we will get him a German passport next week (laughs).\u201d<\/p>\n
