John McEnroe has been called out for his apparent lack of respect towards Mariano Navone following his shock upset win over Novak Djokovic<\/a> at the US Open.<\/p>\n

The 24-time Grand Slam champion broke down in tears and also threw up into a bin<\/a> during his five-set loss to the Argentine on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The fourth seed suffered his first-ever opening-round loss at Flushing Meadows<\/a> and it was the first time he had been defeated in the opening round of a Grand Slam since 2006.<\/p>\n

Following his 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 4-6 6-2 6-1 defeat, Djokovic<\/a> told reporters, \u201cI think it was obvious that it was an awful feeling on the court for me. I don\u2019t want to take too much out of Mariano\u2019s win. Congrats to him, he\u2019s a nice guy and a fighter \u2013 but I didn\u2019t enjoy myself.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something that I have been carrying pretty much every match this year \u2013 vomiting, throwing up. And then my whole body starts to collapse basically, cramping and pain \u2013 the back just gave up in the end and shoulder, and I couldn\u2019t close it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the 39-year-old\u2019s defeat stole the headlines, seven-time major winner McEnroe<\/a> has been heavily criticised on social media for his comments immediately after Navone\u2019s triumph.<\/p>\n

Rather than praising the 25-year-old for the biggest win of his career, the American said Navone<\/a> would be on Court 21 in the second round \u2013 where he will face Stan Wawrinka or Matteo Berrettini.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll be playing your second round on Court 21. We wish you the best. And he is going to have to try and play with that effort and intensity but enjoy the moment, young man,\u201d said McEnroe.<\/p>\n

This was then picked up by popular X account, Awful Announcing \u2013 which highlights bad commentary in sports. After this clip was uploaded, tennis fans did not hold back.<\/p>\n

One user wrote, \u201cMcEnroe\u2019s entire attitude towards Navone was despicable from the jump.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another tweeted, \u201cCompletely disrespectful. The Novak glazing was unbearable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJohn McEnroe is such a loser. Navone earned the biggest win of his life and immediately gets this said about him,\u201d added one X commenter.<\/p>\n

Someone else argued that world No 42 Navone \u2013 who has reached a career high of 29 \u2013 should be put on Arthur Ashe for McEnroe\u2019s comments alone, while another said he was \u201cso f****** tired\u201d of the pundit and ex-professional.<\/p>\n

Finally, another person said it was, \u201clong past time for McEnroe to go away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some felt he was just trying to be funny but it fell flat. Incidentally, there isn\u2019t a Court 21 at Flushing Meadows.<\/p>\n
