{"id":490,"date":"2025-05-22T16:05:21","date_gmt":"2025-05-22T16:05:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=490"},"modified":"2025-05-22T16:05:21","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T16:05:21","slug":"jim-courier-reveals-what-is-a-good-sign-for-novak-djokovic-ahead-of-french-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=490","title":{"rendered":"Jim Courier reveals what is a \u2018good sign\u2019 for Novak Djokovic ahead of French Open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former world No 1s Jim Courier and Caroline Wozniacki have both warned it would be a mistake to write off Novak Djokovic ahead of the 2025 French Open.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/novak-djokovic\">Djokovic<\/a>\u00a0will chase a fourth Roland Garros crown and record-extending 25th Grand Slam title overall at the clay-court major, which will begin on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The legendary Serb has endured a challenging 2025 campaign by his standards, having lost his opening match at four of the eight tournaments he has played.<\/p>\n<p>There have, though, been high points for Djokovic, who was a semi-finalist at the Australian Open and a runner-up at the Miami Masters.<\/p>\n<p>The 38-year-old is competing at this week\u2019s Geneva Open, where he ended a three-match losing streak with his second round win against Marton Fucsovics.<\/p>\n<p>The world No 6 ended his coaching partnership with his former rival Andy Murray prior to his appearance in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking ahead of the French Open, <em>TNT Sports<\/em> pundit Courier was asked about Djokovic\u2019s split with Murray and the tennis icon\u2019s hopes of adding to his Grand Slam tally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst of all, I was surprised that they (Djokovic and Murray) got together in the first place, so I was not gonna be surprised when it ended, it was just gonna be, how long they\u2019re gonna hang on together,\u201d the four-time Grand Slam champion said at an event attended by Tennis365.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNovak has been struggling, he\u2019s not winning the matches he\u2019s used to winning, but he has shown really high peaks this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis gutsy win over Alcaraz in Australia while injured, his quarter-final and semi-final wins in Miami \u2014 he looked like the guy we recognise, it\u2019s just been so erratic for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it\u2019s a good sign he\u2019s taken a wildcard into Geneva this week and he\u2019s looking to get some matches there to build a little momentum into RG (Roland Garros). It\u2019s tough sledding when you\u2019re seeded in that second foursome (from five to eight).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wozniacki, who won the 2018 Australian Open,\u00a0echoed Courier\u2019s thoughts on Djokovic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t write off someone who\u2019s won so many Grand Slams, who\u2019s obviously a big champion,\u201d said the Dane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s been a bit up and down, but last year he said he wanted Olympic gold, he got his gold medal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has clear goals in his mind and that\u2019s where he wants to peak and there\u2019s a reason why he\u2019s playing this week in Geneva: it\u2019s because he knows he hasn\u2019t played his best tennis, he wants to find it before going into the next Grand Slam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can never write him off, he\u2019s beaten Alcaraz, he\u2019s beaten the top players. If you can put it together for seven matches\u2026 it\u2019s just not always easy when you get older too. Your body\u2019s not the same as it used to be, you don\u2019t recover as easily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWinning a Slam is never easy, but especially when you get to the age he\u2019s at, but if someone can do it\u2019s Novak. We know he takes care of his body so well.
