{"id":571,"date":"2025-06-07T16:39:44","date_gmt":"2025-06-07T16:39:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=571"},"modified":"2025-06-07T16:39:44","modified_gmt":"2025-06-07T16:39:44","slug":"coco-gauff-defeats-aryna-sabalenka-to-become-third-american-woman-to-win-french-open-since-1990","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=571","title":{"rendered":"Coco Gauff defeats Aryna Sabalenka to become third American woman to win French Open since 1990"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Coco Gauff made history with her French Open final victory over Aryna Sabalenka, becoming the third American woman to win the singles title since 1990.<\/p>\n<p>The American was victorious 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 to lift her second Grand Slam trophy, ending the Belarusian\u2019s hopes of a first Slam title off hard courts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/coco-gauff\">Gauff<\/a> also broke the stalemate of her head-to-head with Sabalenka, with the two-time Grand Slam champion now leading 5-4 overall.<\/p>\n<p>The world No 1 gained an early double-break advantage to lead 4-1, before also having an opportunity to seal the opening set at 5-4 with two set points on her own serve, taking neither. Nonetheless, Sabalenka would not be denied \u2013 capturing the opening chapter in a tiebreak.<\/p>\n<p>Gauff would dominate the second set, breaking three times in total with her best tennis of the match.<\/p>\n<p>The American went up an early break in the third set and was just one point away from a crucial 4-1 double-break lead. However, in typical Sabalenka fashion, the world No 1 fought back to level things at 3-3, before the American broke to love with a delightful cross-court backhand.<\/p>\n<p>Gauff then finished off the match \u2013 claiming her second Grand Slam \u2013 with a backhand miss from Sabalenka.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust an honour to be here,\u201d said Gauff, during the trophy ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to Aryna [Sabalenka]. You are a fighter and you deserve all the results you have had. You played great despite such terrible conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to thank my team. You guys have been a joy to be around. You all pushed me. I know sometimes I am not easy, but I appreciate you guys.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmelie, thank you for making this tournament possible. I always feel well taken care of here.
