{"id":724,"date":"2025-07-14T16:21:31","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T16:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=724"},"modified":"2025-07-14T16:21:31","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T16:21:31","slug":"jannik-sinner-struggling-to-escape-drug-ban-controversy-after-stunning-wimbledon-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=724","title":{"rendered":"Jannik Sinner struggling to escape drug ban controversy after stunning Wimbledon win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jannik Sinner\u2019s crowning glory may have arrived on Centre Court as he beat his great rival Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday\u2019s Wimbledon final, but the story that dominated the first half of 2025 continues to haunt him.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/jannik-sinner\">Sinner\u2019s<\/a> brilliance as he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/wimbledon\/carlos-alcaraz-reason-lost-wimbledon-final\">beat Alcaraz in four sets at Wimbledon to secure him a first Wimbledon title<\/a>, but some critics were quick to suggest he should not have been on the grass courts at all this summer.<\/p>\n<p>The world No 1 served a three-month ban prior to the Italian Open in May after he tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug at the 2024 Indian Wells Masters tournament.<\/p>\n<p>He could have been banned for a year if his case had gone against him at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with the plea bargain he made with the World Anti-Doping Agency ensuring he didn\u2019t miss any Grand Slam tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>After reaching the final of the French Open last month, Sinner took advantage of his good fortune after he was only banned for a brief period of time by winning at Wimbledon, yet the critics were quick to suggest his victory was tarnished by his past.<\/p>\n<h2>More Tennis News<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-features\/points-and-money-earned-jannik-sinner-carlos-alcaraz-novak-djokovic-ben-shelton-grigor-dimitrov-wimbledon\">Points and money earned by Sinner, Alcaraz, Djokovic, Shelton, Dimitrov at Wimbledon<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/wimbledon\/wimbledon-personal-story-what-it-means\">\u2018Yes Mum, you were right\u2019 \u2013 A very personal story of why Wimbledon means so much<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It came as no surprise that Nick Kyrgios was among the first to cast doubts over Sinner\u2019s credibility as Wimbledon champion, as the 2022 runner-up at the All England Club posted a message that included just an asterisk on his X account, clearly suggesting the Italian\u2019s win will always have a question mark hanging over it.<\/p>\n<p>Experienced British journalist Oliver Holty went much further, as he suggested Sinner\u2019s win at Wimbledon was a \u2018bad day for the sport\u2019<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p>Jannik Sinner shouldn\u2019t even have been playing at Wimbledon, let alone winning it. Bleak day for the tournament and for tennis<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Oliver Holt (@OllieHolt22) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OllieHolt22\/status\/1944471501291332063?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 13, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Radio phone-ins in the UK also discussed whether Sinner\u2019s Wimbledon win was tarnished by his doping ban, while Ben Rumsby in Britain\u2019s Telegraph newspaper declared it was an awful look for Wimbledon to have two players who served drugs bans winning the titles.<\/p>\n<p>That was referencing Iga Swiatek, who was unfortunate to fail a drug test last year after testing positive after using a contaminated sleeping product.<\/p>\n<p>Sinner\u2019s doping story was a little more complex, with his claim that one of his team members used a spray on his cut finger that would then contaminate the Italian player during a massage questioned by many observers.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Sinner suggested his win at Wimbledon was all the more special considering the challenges he has lived through over the last 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly me and the people who are close to me know exactly what we have been through on and off the court, and it has been everything except easy,\u201d Sinner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery emotional, even if I don\u2019t cry.
