Jannik Sinner\u2019s ex physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi claims it \u201churts\u201d to see Umberto Ferrara returning to the world No 1\u2019s team after both were previously held responsible in the Italian\u2019s doping case.<\/p>\n
Four-time Grand Slam champion Sinner announced in a statement on Wednesday that Ferrara would return as the Italian\u2019s fitness trainer<\/a>, news that shocked many across the tennis world.<\/p>\n The announcement came weeks after the world No 1 had sacked fitness trainer Marco Panichi and physiotherapist Ulises Badio\u00a0<\/a>ahead of his ultimately successful Wimbledon campaign.<\/p>\n Panichi and Badio had initially joined Sinner\u2019s entourage late in 2024, after the world No 1 had sacked both Ferrara and Naldi in the aftermath of his drugs test controversy<\/a>.<\/p>\n Sinner was found to have been of \u201cno fault or negligence\u201d by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) last August<\/a>, having twice tested positive for the prohibited substance clostebol in March 2024.<\/p>\n Instead, the report placed responsibility on Ferrara, who was reportedly in charge of Sinner\u2019s anti-doping compliance, and Naldi for the two failed tests.<\/p>\n The report stated that Ferrara had given Naldi trofodermin, a spray containing clostebol, to treat a cut on the physio\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n Ferrara had reportedly warned Naldi that the spray contained a prohibited substance, though he was thought to be aware that Naldi usually treated Sinner without using gloves.<\/p>\n Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz?\u00a0Novak Djokovic\u2019s ex-coach answers who is \u2018better and tougher\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n Jannik Sinner U-turn called \u2018one of the most astonishing PR moves in tennis history\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n It is then alleged that Naldi massaged Sinner after using the spray on a cut on his own finger, therefore causing the contamination.<\/p>\n The world No 1 revealed days after the investigation cleared him \u2013 and was made public \u2013 that Ferrara and Naldi had been sacked, saying he could not \u201ccontinue\u201d working with the two after the \u201cmistakes\u201d made<\/a>.<\/p>\n Sinner would later serve a three-month ban due to his violation<\/a>, settling his case with the World Anti-Doping Agency \u2013 which had planned to appeal the ITIA\u2019s ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.<\/p>\n However, the world No 1 has now rehired Ferrara, less than a year after sacking the fitness trainer who guided him to the top of the ATP Rankings, and to his first major at the 2024 Australian Open.<\/p>\n But there seems to be no possibility of a return for Naldi, who has only spoken publicly on a small number of occasions since the controversy emerged in August 2024.<\/p>\n Speaking to Repubblica<\/em><\/a> this week, Naldi claimed the saga had \u201cdamaged\u201d his image in a brief series of comments.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cHere we go again. Now the nightmare begins again, like last summer.<\/p>\n \u201cI have no intention of commenting. It\u2019s a story that has made me too sad; it has damaged my image.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen the time is right, we\u2019ll talk about everything calmly. I don\u2019t want to ruin this holiday, too. Right now, I just want to be left alone.<\/p>\n \u201cI prefer not to comment.
