Emma Raducanu admitted she was \u201cnot feeling the best\u201d before she and Elena Rybakina retired from their doubles match at the Citi DC Open.<\/p>\n
The Brit overcame Maria Sakkari 6-4, 7-5 in the singles quarter-finals on a sweltering day in Washington.<\/p>\n
Raducanu<\/a>\u00a0took a medical timeout and had her vital signs checked by a doctor late in the second set.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was brutal today,\u201d Raducanu said in her on-court interview. \u201cThanks to everyone for coming out and sitting through the heat.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s incredibly difficult playing, but when I\u2019ve sat and watched matches in the heat, when you\u2019re not moving in the seat, it\u2019s even harder.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s for sure physical, because if you don\u2019t have the abilities then your body will fail you. But at a certain point, it then becomes mental. I knew after the first or second game, it was such a long match, the first set was over an hour.<\/p>\n Almost seven hours after finishing her match against Sakkari, Raducanu took to the court again to partner Rybakina<\/a> in the pair\u2019s doubles semi-final against Taylor Townsend and Zhang Shuai.<\/p>\n Raducanu and Rybakina retired after 25 minutes on court while trailing 4-1 in the opening set having lost serve twice.<\/p>\n Emma Raducanu achieves major rankings breakthrough as she achieves career-first<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Emma Raducanu continues domination over Maria Sakkari to reach first semi-final in 13 months<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Raducanu\u2019s decision to play the doubles match was something of a surprise given what she said in her press conference after beating Sakkari.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m not feeling the best right now, so I just need to go and speak to the doctors,\u201d the 22-year-old said.<\/p>\n \u201cI think you get to a point where you\u2019re so tired that you don\u2019t really know what you\u2019re doing anymore, and I think maybe that helped. I was also thinking if this goes to three sets, I don\u2019t know how I\u2019m going to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n The world No 46 added: \u201cI think the humidity here, as well, it just makes it feel completely like you have just opened an oven and it just stayed open and your head is in there. That\u2019s how it feels. Wimbledon, it gets hot in England, but it\u2019s a drier heat, not quite the same sweating.<\/p>\n \u201cToday, even in the match warmup, you just go outside and you\u2019re sweating. Honestly, it\u2019s even hotter watching, I think, because you\u2019re sat and you don\u2019t create any movement and wind and flowing. A credit to everyone, yeah, and much appreciated to getting out higher and watching.\u201d<\/p>\n Raducanu will face world 48th-ranked Anna Kalinskaya in the Washington semi-finals on Saturday.
