{"id":807,"date":"2025-08-01T09:31:19","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T09:31:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=807"},"modified":"2025-08-01T09:31:19","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T09:31:19","slug":"coco-gauff-disappointed-in-myself-as-service-woes-strike-during-canadian-open-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=807","title":{"rendered":"Coco Gauff \u2018disappointed in myself\u2019 as service woes strike during Canadian Open campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Coco Gauff admits that she is \u201cdisappointed\u201d with her serving after double faults again piled up during her Canadian Open round-three triumph on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The American rallied from a set down to defeat Veronika Kudermetova 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in Montreal, booking a round-four clash versus Victoria Mboko.<\/p>\n<p>Two-time Grand Slam singles champion<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/coco-gauff\"> Gauff<\/a> showed impressive fight to battle past the former world No 9 in Montreal, with 14 double faults not helping the American\u2019s cause during her three-set triumph.<\/p>\n<p>That came after<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/facts-stats\/most-double-faults-served-in-a-wta-match\"> the worst serving day of the 21-year-old\u2019s career during her opening match at the WTA 1000 event<\/a>, with Gauff serving a staggering 23 double faults during her win over Danielle Collins.<\/p>\n<p>Despite serving a combined 37 double faults across her first two matches, the American has still progressed to the second week of the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>And, speaking following her win over world No 42 Kudermetova, Gauff admitted that there were \u201cpositives\u201d to take about her victories despite her service woes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s positives and there\u2019s negatives,\u201d said the world No 2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, I am disappointed in myself when it comes to that part of the game because I didn\u2019t play D.C. [Citi DC Open] to work on that and made changes to that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing well in practice and serving really well in practice. I just would like it to transfer to the match.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does give positives that I\u2019m winning these matches, having literally like one part of my game on a crutch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it\u2019s like if I can stand on both feet, then I can only imagine that it would be a lot more straightforward and a lot easier for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Double faults have plagued Gauff for numerous months now, with the American frequently struggling.<\/p>\n<h2>Tennis News<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/former-atp-star-mentions-alcaraz-djokovic-sinner-canadian-open-criticism\">Alcaraz, Djokovic, Sinner absences addressed as former ATP star sends Canadian Open \u2018drag on\u2019 warning<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/venus-williams-emotional-health-message-after-tennis-comeback\">Venus Williams pens emotional message as she marks one year since major operation<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gauff famously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/us-open\/coco-gauff-shocking-statistic-out-usopen\">served 19 double faults during her fourth-round defeat to Emma Navarro at the US Open in 2024<\/a>, and 21 during her Wuhan Open loss to Aryna Sabalenka later that season.<\/p>\n<p>The American also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/coco-gauff-accepting-admission-scrappy-indian-wells-win\">served 21 double faults against Moyuka Uchijima in Indian Wells earlier this season<\/a>, though she was able to prevail in a third-set tiebreak.<\/p>\n<p>Gauff\u2019s 37 double faults in Montreal is the third-highest tally recorded at a WTA 1000 tournament this season \u2013 with the 21-year-old already occupying the top two spots.<\/p>\n<p>She served 42 double faults during her run to a runner-up finish at the Italian Open, and a total of 38 during her Indian Wells campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about that statistic during her post-match press conference in Canada, the reigning French Open champion admitted that it made for grim reading.<\/p>\n<p>Gauff added: \u201cI don\u2019t want to lead that stat, and I want to do better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know I probably won\u2019t be ever double fault-free, but if I could get that to 2%, 3%, it would make a big difference in just making these matches a lot easier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that I\u2019m winning matches and finding ways to win with that is definitely a positive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019m a tough critic of myself. I know I can do better, and I know I should do better.
