{"id":824,"date":"2025-08-05T06:40:25","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T06:40:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=824"},"modified":"2025-08-05T06:40:25","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T06:40:25","slug":"emma-raducanu-makes-stunning-coaching-move-as-she-turns-to-tennis-legends-former-mentor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=824","title":{"rendered":"Emma Raducanu makes stunning coaching move as she turns to tennis legend\u2019s former mentor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Emma Raducanu has pulled off a major coup as she has appointed one of Rafael Nadal\u2019s former mentors as her coach until the end of the year, but that doesn\u2019t mean she has stopped working with Mark Petchey.<\/p>\n<p>2021 US Open winner Raducanu has added Francisco Roig to her coaching set-up following a successful trial period after Wimbledon and he will be in her player\u2019s box at this week\u2019s Cincinnati Open.<\/p>\n<p>The 57-year-old, of course, comes with a lot of pedigree as he is not only a former player as he peaked at No 60 in the ATP Rankings, but he also worked alongside all-time great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/rafael-nadal\">Nadal<\/a> for nearly 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Roig was part of Nadal\u2019s team from 2005 until 2022 and he first worked alongside Toni Nadal and later Carlos Moya, acting as alternate coach.<\/p>\n<p>During his time with the team, Nadal won 22 Grand Slams, including a record 14 French Open titles, became world No 1 and was part of the Big Three with Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer who dominated tennis for more than two decades.<\/p>\n<p>After ending his working relationship with Nadal, Roig started working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/former-rafael-nadal-coach-takes-matteo-berrettini-challenge\">Matteo Berrettini in December 2023<\/a> before they parted ways in October 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Although the appointment of Roig came out of the blue, the decision to get a new coach is not a big surprise as both Raducanu and Petchey admitted that she needed a full-time mentor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/who-is-mark-petchey-emma-raducanu-rumoured-coach\">Petchey started working with the 22-year-old in March<\/a> and they have enjoyed incredible results as she has climbed back into the top 35 of the WTA Rankings, having started the year at No 60 while she has also reached the semi-finals of the Washington DC Open in July.<\/p>\n<h2>Emma Raducanu News<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-features\/emma-raducanu-biggest-fear-amanda-anisimova\"><strong>Emma Raducanu\u2019s biggest fear came back to haunt her in crushing Amanda Anisimova defeat<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/former-world-no-1-predicts-emma-raducanu-win-another-grand-slam-title\">Former world No 1 predicts if Emma Raducanu can win another Grand Slam title<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But Petchey has not been able to accompany her to all tournaments due to his tennis commentary role as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/emma-raducanu-new-coach-mark-petchey-update-wimbledon\">he admitted a few weeks ago<\/a>: \u201cI have some other commitments I can\u2019t get out of.
