{"id":929,"date":"2025-08-25T14:30:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T14:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=929"},"modified":"2025-08-25T14:30:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T14:30:17","slug":"benjamin-bonzis-coach-slams-daniil-medvedev-after-major-us-open-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=929","title":{"rendered":"Benjamin Bonzi\u2019s coach slams Daniil Medvedev after major US Open controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Benjamin Bonzi\u2019s coach admits he would \u201cprefer not to talk\u201d about Daniil Medvedev\u2019s behaviour after their hugely controversial US Open clash.<\/p>\n<p>After<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/daniil-medvedev-rankings-collapse-shock-wimbledon-exit\"> beating former world No 1 Medvedev in the opening round of Wimbledon<\/a>, Bonzi again saw off the Russian in US Open round one action on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>However, the manner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-videos\/watch-chaos-daniil-medvedev-match-booing-benjamin-bonzi-furious-photographer-kicked-out\">of the world No 51\u2019s 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4 triumph was anything but straightforward<\/a>, and loaded with controversy.<\/p>\n<p>Serving for the match and holding a match point in the third set, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/benjamin-bonzi\">Bonzi<\/a> missed a first serve, only for a photographer to then enter the court in an attempt to leave the match.<\/p>\n<p>Umpire Greg Allensworth ruled that the disruption was significant enough to allow Bonzi to have his first serve back, drawing the ire of 2021 US Open champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/daniil-medvedev\">Medvedev<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A six-minute delay saw Medvedev and Allensworth clash, with the former world No 1 riling up the crowd to the point where some were booing Bonzi when play eventually resumed.<\/p>\n<p>The incident looked as if it had completely turned the tide of the match, with Medvedev saving a match point and breaking Bonzi, before winning the third-set breaker and running away with the fourth set.<\/p>\n<p>However, the match took a stunning final turn late on, with Bonzi rallying from a break down in the final set to seal an extraordinary victory.<\/p>\n<h2>Tennis News<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/novak-djokovic-surprised-physical-struggles-time-warning-unforced-errors-during-us-open-win\">Novak Djokovic \u2018surprised\u2019 after physical struggles, time warning and unforced errors during US Open win<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/when-janice-tjen-said-about-emma-raducanu-ahead-of-us-open-round-2-clash\">What Janice Tjen said about Emma Raducanu ahead of US Open Round 2 clash<\/a><\/p>\n<p>After his third straight round-one defeat at a Grand Slam, Medvedev obliterated his racket by smashing it into the side of his chair, and took a notable amount of time to leave the court.<\/p>\n<p>The controversy was the most talked-about incident of the opening day in New York, and drew a strong reaction from Bonzi\u2019s coach, doubles great Nicolas Mahut.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <em>L\u2019Equipe<\/em>, the five-time Grand Slam champion and former world No 1 slammed Medvedev, and compared the Russian\u2019s behaviour to Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an incredible incident,\u201d said Mahut. \u201cIn any case, incidents like that always happen in very important moments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the referee didn\u2019t necessarily handle the situation well and I prefer not to talk about Daniil\u2019s behaviour in the heat of the moment, because I don\u2019t want to say things that I might regret, but I can\u2019t imagine Alcaraz or Sinner acting like that for a second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Medvedev finds himself reckoning with his latest Grand Slam early exit, holding a 1-4 record at majors this year, Bonzi finds himself in the second round of a major for the third time in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in the aftermath of the dramatic match, the 29-year-old admitted it had been difficult to remain focused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never experienced something like that I don\u2019t know. Maybe we waited five minutes before the match point,\u201d said the Frenchman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen it was so difficult to play. So noisy. All the time during the points, between the points\u2026 it was a very wild atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to stay calm, stay in the match. It was not easy.
