{"id":982,"date":"2025-09-05T16:50:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T16:50:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=982"},"modified":"2025-09-05T16:50:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T16:50:06","slug":"emma-raducanu-makes-controversial-scheduling-decision-chooses-south-korean-tournament-over-representing-great-britain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tennisring.com\/?p=982","title":{"rendered":"Emma Raducanu makes controversial scheduling decision, chooses South Korean tournament over representing Great Britain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from representing Great Britain in the Billie Jean King\u2019s quarter-final showdown against Japan after accepting a wildcard for the Korea Open.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/emma-raducanu\">Raducanu<\/a> was set to complete the British team, competing alongside Katie Boulter, Jodie Burrage, and Sonay Kartal on September 18 in a tie against Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the Brit has accepted a wild card for the WTA 500 tournament in Seoul, taking place September 15 \u2013 21.<\/p>\n<p>The 2021 US Open champion\u2019s replacement is expected to be announced sometime in the next few days.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Japanese team will consist of four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, Moyuka Uchijima, Ena Shibahara, Eri Hozumi, and Shuko Aoyama.<\/p>\n<p>The winner of the tie will go on to face the victor of the quarter-final tie between the United States and Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n<p>Raducanu also participated in the Korea Open in 2024, reaching the last eight \u2013 retiring against Ukrainian Daria Kasatkina after losing the first set 6-1, after suffering from foot discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the Brit progressed one round further, but, again, retired mid-match against top seed Jelena Ostapenko whilst down 3-0 in the third set.<\/p>\n<p>Billie Jean King, after whom the Federation Cup was re-named, had previously commented that she was \u2018excited\u2019 to see Raducanu in action during the team competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s huge that you can speak the language of wherever you are,\u201d King remarked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaducanu is very articulate as well, she\u2019s very good at getting up and speaking, covering a lot of subjects. You can tell she thinks about a lot of things compared to a lot of the players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re really lucky to have her but she likes it, she likes playing for her country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I were her, I\u2019d be pretty excited.
